BUS STOP by: William IngeThe characters each face their own inner demons that they struggle to overcome and understand. While the characters in the play are trapped in the diner, unable to leave due to the storm, similarly they are forced to confront these inner demons.
The bitter cold of the blizzard outside evokes a bundled up and closed off feeling. Each character’s inner struggles are hidden under layers of clothes and facades. This is contrasted with the warm cozy feeling inside the diner. As the characters shed layers of clothes, getting to the core of their being,we see their guards begin to slip as well. We discover, as they start to shed their emotional fronts, the real person they are and what they were bundling up within. Bo’s love for Cherie, while blinding him at first, later transforms him: only by losing her does he find the courage to confront his limitations and move forward with his life. Only then does Cherie accept his love. |
